The Hellbrunn mountain near Salzburg is characterized by rich fauna and flora, therefore it's the ideal place for unique baroque gardens, like the garden of the Hellbrunn Castle. It also is the ideal area for one of the most modern European zoos.
The Hellbrunn Zoo must not be considered as a classic zoological garden where animals are separately kept in cages and are displayed in showcases in an artificial environment. The Hellbrunn Zoo is a geozoo and it allows visitors to admire the over 400 species of animals in an environment most similar to the natural one.
Therefore, the zoo is divided into geographical areas so that all the different species of animal can live free in their natural environment. It has been possible to create different environments thanks to the natural flora of the area.
You will find areas dedicated to exotic animals of African and North-America, areas dedicated to Eurasian animals and to natural flora and fauna.
The zoo provides scientific information about animals and their characteristics.
One of the most attracting event in this geozoo is the feeding of animals, in particular the cheetahs who are spurred to chase their prey hanging the meat on a rope and drawning through the open-air enclosure at a certain speed so that the cheetahs show off their strength.
Zoo at night
During summer you can also visit the zoo at night till 9.00 pm. The extension of opening hours allows to better observe the life of African felines.
