The Mozart Square is dominated by the impressive statue dedicated to the musician. The statue was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who contributed financing the work and donating the marble pedestal, now owned by the Carolino Augusteum Museum.
The statue was ceremoniously unveiled on September 5, 1842 in the presence of Mozart's sons. Mozart's widow, Constanze von Nissen died on March 6th of the same year.

According to the legend, the crowd acclaimed “Mozart is here” when the site for the erection of the statue was being discussed.
Located in the so-called “Antretter House”, in Mozartplatz 4, there is the Salzburg University's Institute of Music. Johann Ernst von Antretter and his wife Maria Anna Elisabeth lived here. The Antretter family was closely acquainted with the Mozart family since the children of both families knew each other. The Antretter family also commissioned Mozart to compose the "Antretter Serenade" K. 185.
Something interesting to know:
Originally, the monument to Mozart was supposed to be unveiled in 1841 but a valuable Roman mosaic was discovered during excavation work.
