Now located inside the city, the Mirabell Palace was built outside the city walls under the reign of Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau for Salome Alt, his concubine who bore him fifteen children.
Forced to abdicate in 1612, he was imprisoned in the palace. His successor, the cousin Markus Sittikus gave the current name to the palace which was originally called Altenau.

The palace and its gardens were drawn into the city by the defences built by Prince Archbishop Paris Graf von Lodron. He always enjoyed staying in the palace and died there in 1653.
In 1727, the palace was once more modified and embellished in baroque style by the Prince Archbishop Franz Anton von Harrach. In 1818, a fire damaged most of the palace which was so much loved by Prince Archbishops. The fire spared the Marble Hall, the great marble steps by Lukas von Hilldebrandt and the sculptures by Georg Raphael Donner. Nowadays, the palace looks much more modest and plain than it was in the past also thanks to the work of Peter de Nobile Architect-in-Chief.
