Mozart’s house in Makartplatz in Salzburg
W. A. Mozart was born in the house located in Getreidegasse on January 27, 1756. His father, Leopold Mozart, worked as a music teacher for the Prince-Archbishop and spent most of his life to give a musical education to his children Amadeus and Nannerl. Nannerl gave up the musical career very soon for getting married.
The family felt the need to find a bigger house mostly because of the artistic careers of Mozarts. In 1765 when W. A. Mozart was 9 years old, Leopold considered that the house was too small for himself and for his children who needed private rooms for practising and working.
The house in Makartplats became available in 1773 and the Mozart family moved there when they returned from a journey to Vienna which lasted a few months. The house belonged to the Mozart family for many years, even though Leopold lived here almost alone after his wife’s death in 1778, the leaving of his son Amadeus in 1780 and the marriage of his daughter Nannerl in 1784.
The history of this building was interesting even before the coming of the Mozart family. Since 1671, this house situated in Hannibalplatz, now Makartplatz, was known as Tanzmeisterhaus, dance master house. The dance master became important during years because he instructed young nobles in the protocol and behavioural codex of the court.
After Leopold Mozart’s death, the house was inhabited by the new owners till World War II. A bomb destroyed two thirds of the building in 1944. The part which wasn’t damaged was sold to an insurance company that used it to erect an office building.
In 1989 the insurance’s office building was purchased by the International Mozart Foundation and it is now used as a museum.
