The Hellbrunn Castle was built as a summer residence by Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus von Hohenems. A lover of country residences in Italian style, he commissioned the same architect of the Cathedral, Santino Solari, to build the castle. The castle was built in the style of the great Roman villas of the Renaissance and taking advantage of natural water resources.
More than a residence, the castle represented Prince-Archbishop's power. Besides the building itself, the Hellbrunn Castle is a unique masterpiece thanks to its gardens and water games.
Nearby watercourses were canalized thanks to a wonderful water organ. The Renaissance garden of the castle was built following the style of the Villa Pratolino garden near Florence. The garden contains wells, trick fountains (Wasserspiele), ponds, artificial grottos created for entertaining the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg and his guests. According to new theatrical trends, Markus Sittikus von Hohenems decided to build the Stone Theatre (Steintheater) from the natural stone quarry in Hellbrunn.
At the beginning of 1700, the park was redecorated by the inspector of the royal gardens Franz Anton Danreiter in order to adapt it to the "new" style of the age. Mythical statues were built for this purpose.
