Dominating the city center, the Fortress of Hohensalzburg has been watching the flourishing of the city over the centuries like a good caretaker. Built in 1077, the castle observed the history of Salzurg without being involved in the many wars and conflicts which took place in this city. Not considering the cannon ball which struck a marble pillar during a farmworkers’ struggle, the fortress has never been captured through its history.

Ruled for centuries by Prince-archbishops, Salzburg is dominated by this fortress which was built by the archbishop Gebhard during the Investiture Conflict between Pope and Emperor. You should know that the archbishop Gebhard belonged to the papal party. Appreciated by Konrad I and modified over centuries by the archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, the Fortress of Hohensalzburg is the biggest and best preserved medieval castle in Central Europe.
When the fortress no longer played a defensive role, it served as military barracks and as a prison. Nowadays, it is a museum.
The imposing Fortress of Hohensalzburg is the first thing you notice in Salzburg even before being impressed by the charm of the city itself. Therefore, you cannot miss it. You can reach it on foot by climbing a few hundred steps even in winter or you can take the funicular if you wish to save time and energy.
The fortress worths a visit even just for the wonderful view overlooking the city.
