In 1623, Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron began to develop plans for the construction of a University Church, but works only started 70 years later.
Before the church was built, students and professors met in the Aula academica, university lecture hall.

In 1694, Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun decided to build a large University church. It was built under the management of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, prominent Baroque architect of the time. The work was only completed 8 years later, but unfortunately the architect was not able to see it having meanwhile lost his eyesight.
Through the years, the church had a moving destiny.
During Napoleon’s Invasion in 1800, the church was used as a hay store. In 1810, the church lost its original purpose. During the Austro-Hungarian monarchy it served as a classical secondary school and military church. In 1922, the Church provided the setting for the première of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's "Great World Theater".
The Church has regained its original purpose only in 1964 after the reopening of the University of Salzburg.
Something interesting to know:
The chapels inside the church are dedicated to the patron saints of the university's faculties: St. Thomas Acquinas (Theology), St. Ivo (Jurisprudence), St. Luke (Medicine) and St. Catherine (Philosophy).
