St. Peter’s Abbey in Salzburg

The first abbey was founded around 700 AC by the missionary Rupert (Hroudbert) as Salzburg still was called Juvavum. In 1127 a fire destroyed the church. Three years later a new three-naved Romanesque basilica was built.
During the following centuries, the church was subject to numerous changes and adaptations. In 1240, the Romanesque portal was built while the St. Veits Chapel, one of Salzburg’s oldest Gothic buildings, was buit in 1319. Two gigantic Renaissance bronze candlesticks were donated by Archbishop Wolf Dietrich in 1619.

In 1700 the abbey was embellished with Rococo elements. This style reflects in the large number of altars while the interior of the church still gives a clear impression of the Romanesque style.
Several of the altar paintings are the work of Martin Johann Schmidt, also called “Kremser-Schmidt“, one of the most famous altar painters of the 18th century.
In the 20th century the abbot Petrus Klotz founded the Collegium Benedectinum.

Something interesting to know

In one of the side chapels of the church there are the memorial of Johann Michael Haydn, a marble plaque in memory of Nannerl Mozart, Amadeus’ sister and the tomb of Hans Werner von Raitenau, Wolf Dietrich’s father.
The abbey is strictly connected to the musical history of Salzburg.
In 1769, when Mozart was only 13 years old, he composed the “Dominicus Mass” for Abbot Hagenauer.
In 1782, Johann Michael Haydn composed the “Rupert Mass” for St. Peter’s abbey.
