Rock salt mining in Austria has a millenary history considering that tools for salt extraction and human remains dating back to the Celtic Period were discovered in the salt mines of Hallein, now only a tourist attraction. The name itself comes from the Celtic word “hall” or “hal” for “salt”.
The economic, artistic and architectonic flourishing of Salzburg is due to salt mining, therefore Hallein is worth a visit. You can visit the salt mines of Hallein either in summer or in winter. This is a unique experience since you will be able to enter the salt mines tunnels as the miners did and you’ll see wonderful natural surroundings. For security reasons, you cannot visit the salt mines by your own, but on guided tours for groups of about 10 people.
The salt mines consists of rather wide galleries, so they are not too much claustrophobic. A guide will be with you speaking German, English and on request even Italian. This is a visit into the depths of the earth, but also a funny experience for groups of young people and for families with children. Before descending into the salt mine, you’ll have to wear useful white outfits keeping your clothes clean.
At the start of your journey, you will take a small train into the galleries and into the heart of the mountain. You will be able to imagine the hard work of miners, but you’ll also have fun getting from one floor to the next on smoothly polished slides. Alternatively, you can descend using steps. You’ll cross the Austrian/German border twice until you’ll reach the famous salt lake.
Outside the mines there is a Celtic Village, reconstructed from an ancient Celtic settlement. Even if the area is open also in winter, it livens up during summer with various activities. Visiting Salt Mines with Children from age 4
